IFES seeks graphic designers to design and publish a variety of materials for both U.S. Government (USG) and other domestic and international audiences. A consulting graphic designer will thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment to provide exceptional, informative and engaging graphics. At the direction of the Senior Business Manager and/or Director of Strategic Communications and Advocacy and/or the Graphic Design Officer, the consulting graphic designer will provide one or more of the following services:

  • In collaboration with IFES staff, develop, execute and incorporate feedback for graphics for a variety of printed and digital materials on deadline
  • Working closely with IFES technical staff, develop graphics for technical processes and activities based on proposal text
  • Work with IFES staff to develop a set of standard graphics for activities regularly included in IFES proposals
  • Create visual graphics for activities for specific IFES proposals that succinctly explain technical content
  • Create visual elements such as graphics, logos, original images and illustrations for proposals, print, web and social media to powerfully, succinctly and clearly deliver information and messaging
  • Manage desktop publishing support on proposals, publications and marketing materials, including but not limited to layout and text flow in accordance with the IFES style guide; file preparation for offset and digital printing; and cover design in four and two colors
  • Oversee document layout and graphics, and check for accuracy and errors
  • Maintain regular communication with IFES supervisors and other staff – including Proposal Managers for bids – to furnish requested graphics and updates to graphics in a timely manner
  • Adhere to the technical outline and compliance matrix/guidelines as prepared/agreed to by IFES staff and Proposal Managers
  • Ensure products adhere to IFES style and branding guidelines
  • Ensure the responsiveness of proposal formatting and graphics to donor requirements

Deliverables:

  • Graphic design; photo and image editing; and production of various types of proposals, publications (election FAQs, whitepapers, one-pagers, etc.) and marketing materials
  • Update and design of IFES templates

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in graphic design
  • At least three years of related experience in graphic design, layout and publication, with a strong portfolio of illustrations and other graphics
  • Experience turning complex technical language from proposals into graphics
  • Proven experience with design software and technologies, including Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator), as well as Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with HTML
  • Ability to quickly analyze and synthesize knowledge including background documents, strategy session feedback and technical inputs
  • A creative, critical thinker with an eye for aesthetics and detail
  • Proven ability to adhere to deadlines and budgets, as well as prioritize and multitask
  • Experience adhering to editorial and technical style guides
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
  • Comfortable with frequent cross-functional, senior management and vendor contact, and exerting indirect authority to deliver results
  • Experience managing projects with printers

 Desired:

  • Familiarity with AP style
  • Previous graphic development for proposals for submission to USAID and/or the U.S. Department of State
  • Knowledge of USG style, branding and formatting requirements
  • Front and back-end web development experience
  • Familiarity with Drupal, SEO and social media best practices
  • Knowledge of democracy and governance in developing country settings, including any of the following: political and electoral processes; anti-corruption; local partner capacity development; civil society advocacy and oversight; participation and inclusion; and/or media and the information space
