Save the Children seeks a Social and Behavior Change (SBC) Advisor who will serve on the upcoming Haiti Resilience Food Security Assistance Program funded by USAID/Food for Peace. The focus for this program will provide food assistance to help vulnerable communities address the root causes of hunger and malnutrition so people are able to feed themselves in the long term. These activities will aim to reduce chronic malnutrition among children under five and pregnant or lactating women, increase and diversify household income, provide opportunities for microfinance and savings, and support agricultural programs that build resilience and reduce vulnerability to shocks and stresses. In close collaboration with technical experts including member SBC colleagues, the SBC Advisor will oversee the design, planning, and implementation of all SBC activities. This individual will be responsible for supporting SBC interventions across the activities by playing a lead role in guiding formative research; developing a SBC strategy and implementation plan; supporting the development, testing and production of tools and job aids; and monitoring the progress of activities to ensure a consistent and coherent execution of interventions. The SBC Advisor will identify theory and evidence-based strategies to reduce social and behavioral risk factors that lead to adverse health, livelihoods and resilience outcomes. In addition, the Advisor will provide capacity strengthening in SBC approaches as they pertain to nutrition, health, livelihoods, gender norm-change, and resilience-building objectives at the individual, household, community and system levels; and ensure sustainability of the program’s SBC strategy and approaches.
This position will be located in Port-au-Prince and is contingent upon donor approval and funding.
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
- Develop and implement SBC-related qualitative and qualitative formative research together with the MEAL team to inform the SBC strategy development.
- Lead SBC strategy development and provide technical guidance and coordination for the participatory design and implementation, particularly at household and community levels (includes: IPC, mass and social media- community mobilization and advocacy; capacity strengthening; monitoring and learning) in close collaboration with SBC colleagues from SCUS
- Provide technical guidance for the development, adaptation, field testing, and effective use of state of-the art SBC approaches, materials, tools and job aids in support of improved outcomes in nutrition, health, livelihoods and resilience outcomes nutrition, MCH, livelihoods and resilience-building.
- Train and mentor staff on the implementation of the strategy, approaches, tools, and job aids.
- Support the development of effective SBC M&E indicators and evaluation designs.
- Lead material and activity field testing design and implementation in collaboration with SCUS SBC colleagues
- Support capacity strengthening and strategies to improve community-led advocacy and community mobilization in support of addressing the nutrition, health, health, livelihoods and resilience needs of the poorest and most vulnerable, and gender norm change.
- Foster and maintain effective, professional relationships with a broad range of community, public, and private sector counterparts
- Identify and supervise technical deliverables of SBC consultants, design agencies and mass media production houses.
- Ensure timely and quality completion of all relevant program deliverables and reporting.
- Document SBC and community mobilization approaches, successes and challenges to support programmatic and sector-wide learning.
- Generate timely information regarding SBC strategy effectiveness, feeding this information into collaborating, learning and adapting (CLA) processes and leading necessary adjustments.
- Travel as needed between project work sites in the targeted regions of Haiti.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience required in SBC, SBCC, community health, community mobilization, participatory training facilitation, health communication, public health promotion, behavioral sciences, or related field;
- Master’s degree preferably in communication or marketing; or social science such as sociology, anthropology; will accept degrees in other fields if there is evidence of sustained experience in the fields noted above;
- Proven experience in social and behavior change related work, including but not limited to strategic, development communications or campaigns, or commercial marketing/advertising. Preference preferably in the field of nutrition or in associated development areas of health or agriculture;
- Experience necessary in creative, strategic communication design and media/materials development (mobile phones, print and/or television). This includes pre-testing and production of communications materials;
- Work experience at the community level in programs that require active engagement with families and the community;
- Knowledge of the public and private sector (marketing/advertising) communication landscape in Haiti;
- Experience with the design and implementation of qualitative anthropological/sociological research and /or communication monitoring and evaluation a plus;
- Prior experience with USAID or development donor funded initiatives is highly desirable;
- Fluency in French (Creole?) and excellent written and verbal English language skills; and
- Qualified Haitian nationals are highly encouraged to apply.
